Freedom
For those who think that the word ‘tenager’ is spelt wrong and is ‘teenager’ I am going to say that they are wrong. I am ten years old and my hormones are kicking in at this stage, so as I am not classified as a ‘teenager’ I was called a ‘tenager’ on my tenth birthday. All my friends in Sitges (my tenth birthday was there so I had a party and a huge traditional (for me) pancake cake, yum yum! : p ) agreed that it was a good name for me ๐
A brief description of this blog:
I would like people to know that I am not going to be political or try to convince people that this is the best way to educate their children. This blog is simply going to be about how I have my education, I apologise in advance for the many photos of myself, but this is about me and my classroom of life. I hope you don’t get bored because my classroom is big and my teachers are many.
Funnily enough, the most common question that I get asked by adults is: “What about socialisation? don’t you miss having friends?”
My answer to that is:
I meet more people than I would do if I was in school, and it’s much easier to speak to adults than it would be if the only adults I met were my mum and dad and teachers, and the occasional friend of my mum and dad. It is a fact that I am confident in speaking to adults, but I am better off when I am mixing with people in their twenties and teens, as I am a little bit old for my chronological age (I think so anyway). I am ok with children around my age, but sometimes they prove to be a bit annoying (and boring) but when I want to play and be silly they are fine, anyway, there are always exceptions in every area ๐ I will mention no names ๐
Other things that certain adults might say is: “What about qualifications? ”
My answer to that is:
I have always been told that it is never too late to learn, and my dad is living proof, because he went back to school at forty eight, and I think that he is a good example to me, as I hope to travel for quite a long time yet.
One of the things about school which I am very dubious about is:
I have heard that you’re not allowed to talk to the people next to you, and I think that is unnatural, ย but I’m not going to pursue that subject either, because I have never been to school so can’t give a balanced view.
What I like best about my lifestyle is:
I am freerange, I have lots and lots of friends and I can look after all sorts of lovely (and grumpy) animals a lot of the time, because my parents are volunteers and do voluntary housesitting, as you know, one of my favourite hobbies is photography, and I have the perfect opportunity to get superb photographs of rare and local butterflies and orchids all over the place! Loads of things I learn are not actual subjects in schools, like learning about plants, animals and trees. I am immersed in my learning, living it, being in it, part of it. For example: when I learn about lifecycles and food chains I actually see it and touch it. I have watched the complete lifecycle of caterpillars and frogs with my own eyes and not just looked at pictures in books.
My hopes for the future are:
At the moment, I’d like to be a linguist when I grow up, but I need to learn languages to do that and I am not so good at applying myself, and learning languages is hard, so I don’t know about that. I have been learning French on ‘Duolingo’ https://www.duolingo.com ( check out this app) and I meet lots of people from different countries so I pick up the occasional word or phrase in another language, which I never forget.
I would love to live in a V.W camper with a dog and travel on my own, mainly in France, visiting Spain once in a while. I could stay in England one winter, because I would like to see some snow again believe it or not, I haven’t seen snow in about three years, so I would love to see some again ๐ ‘do you wanna build a snowman…’ :p
My mum would like me to be a writer because she says I am very good at it, and it would give me the freedom to keep travelling. She says I could illustrate my own book because she thinks I am great at drawing also.
ย My parents’ worries are:
They worry that I go to bed too late and get up too late.
My answer to that is:
I can’t sleep unless I’m really tired, so I read until I am. In the morning I feel sleepy and warm, and downstairs is sometimes cold or at least not as snuggly as my bed, so I stay in my sleeping bag as long as possible to be warm, and I often make up the ends of my dreams if they get cut off. ย
My parents worry that I eat too many sugary things and too much junk food like pizza and chips.
My answer to that is:
I eat lots of healthy things as well, like a whole punnet of tomatoes in one go, and two hundred and fifty grams of strawberries in one go as well. I also eat tons of raw carrots, and my mum’s delicious chilli ‘non’ carne (I am vegetarian), ย and her roast potatoes and her roast parsnips, and lots of granny smith apples, and, when they’re available, raw peas, to say nothing of raw red pepper and oranges and grapefruit, and my mum’s macaroni ‘non’ cheese ( I don’t like cheese).
So technically, I am a healthy eater, even if I do eat junk food a lot. :p ๐

So for the many people who think that home educated children miss out on socialising I have this to say….I think the way I socialise is very natural, I get to choose my friends from different age groups, cultures, backgrounds and from different countries. I have human and animal friends and I am not left with a small selection of children all the same age as me. I can choose to communicate and see my friends when I want, if I change or they change I can choose to drop them, or them drop me without being told that I have to be nice or have to be friends because my parents are friends with their parents, or because we go to the same school or live in the same area. And for all the people who think home educated people are locked up by their parents and the parents choose the friends……maybe there is some truth in this ๐ lol
Uoh here we go in the naughty room
Overview…..
So have you guessed yet that the world is my classroom and my teachers are everyone and everything in it?. Learning is an adventure, the world is also my garden and my playground which I share with everyone else. The way I live makes the great outdoors the conservatory of my living space and because of this, I am always very close to nature. I am fortunate to have seen six Kingfisher birds in my lifetime so far ( how many? Yes six!!!) I witness nature happening all around me on a daily basis, one day is never the same as another and I have learned a lot about nature science just by living amongst it, of course the internet helps with that little extra research and for identifying things. It is my ambition to get an excellent photo of a kingfisher, and I will, even though they are very shy birds. Here is a list of some home educated people:
Beatrix Potter, Thomas Edison, Agatha Christie, Alexander Graham Bell, Lewis Carroll, Florence Nightingale, Virginia Woolf and Taylor Swift.
I have never been to school so I can’t compare school to home education, but I love my freedom and if later in life I need a certificate to say I am capable then I will go and achieve one. It is never too late to get an academic education with qualifications. Qualifications don’t guarantee you a job. University leaves you in debt. I believe work can bring you money but it does not guarantee you happiness. I have learned from the way I live with my parents that it is easier than people think to live on very little money …..and be happy.
All children are different, my brother had a structured home education up to secondary level, my parents say that they felt this was better suited to his personality and his way of learning. He now has a degree in psychology but is not in a job that he likes, he works to earn money to live like so many people. We are who we are, and life, experience and people shape us. What I want to be most of all when I grow up is happy ๐
For anyone who thinks I do not get enough academia: I know that the capital of England is ‘E’ ๐ lol

Ok, I have been looking up some quotes so I will end this blog with a couple of quotes, and have found so many good and inspirational quotes that in future, I will begin all of my blogs with a quote ๐
“I think you learn more if you are laughing at the same time” …Mary Ann Shaffe ( American writer and editor)
“Education is no subsitute for intelligence” …Frank Herbert (an American science fiction writer)
I apologise to all of my teachers who have been missed out, but this blog could have gone on forever if I had included every one of them ๐
