Me in poppies Normandy

The above picture of me in the poppies is very apt, because we have been in Normandy around the time of the D day celebrations. We missed the celebrations as we were housesitting.

For those who prefer to see the poppies without me ๐Ÿ˜

image

Beautiful

Can’t say fairer than that ๐Ÿ˜‰

Whilst housesitting in Normandy we took care of one dog.

image

Dippi dog

two huge donkeys.

image

Bill & Ben

one cat.

image

Fizzy the cat

four chickens and a cockerell, 3 white hens and 1 brown. Here is the cockerell with one of the hens.

image

Beautiful cockerell and hen

Dippi the dog is a rescue dog, literally, he was picked up off the road. Because of this he is not trusting of humans and he treated us like we were intruders, which I suppose we were. He was also sad because he used to live with two other dogs, but not long ago whilst in the care of some kennels one of the other dogs ran away and was never found. If that was not bad enough the remaining dog fell ill and died, so Dippi is probably lonely and confused. Because of this we were very patient with him and gave him a wide berth. He continued to growl at us for quite some time but when we ate at the outside table he was very friendly.

image

Friendly Dippi

Also when we took him for walks he was charming.

image

Walkies

Twice per day.

image

Fun time

By the end of the first week at our housesit Dippi was lovely and began to enjoy our company, he even let mum groom him ๐Ÿ™‚

image

Dippi smiling

Bill and Ben the donkeys are huge, they are very friendly and inquisitive. We groomed them most days which they really enjoyed. They were very funny to watch when they played together, sometimes they played tug o war with a stick. Here you can see how big they are because I am nearly as tall as mum who is 5ft 1 inch.

image

Big Ben

Fizzy the cat brought us presents of dead shrew most days ๐Ÿ˜ฆ she stayed out of our way for a couple of days but then began to want attention. She loves the donkeys but they do not always appreciate her jumping around under their hooves, she is a very young cat :}

image

Ben and Fizzy

The chickens were very friendly and came running when we approached their field, this is because every day we had veg peelings for them because we are vegetarian. There were lovely sunsets in Normandy. Here is one I captured with my fujifilm camera.

image

Sunset my very own photographic work

There were strawberries and fresh peas to be had from the polytunnel :p Mum found this amazing salamander in there ๐Ÿ™‚ it was well scary when it moved :/ here it is.

image

Salamander in France

One day a swallow fledgling fell from the guttering. It was a bit stunned for a while but soon took off again, but not before it was captured on film.

image

Swallow fledgling

I took this pic of a great spotted woodpecker, it was hard to get because it kept flying around, I think it was collecting ants :/

image

Great spotted woodpecker

Whilst we were housesitting my parents and I did some illustrations for a childrens book that is being written by a girl we know from USA. Here is one.

image

I drew the cat in this illustration

We went to a manoir belonging to a helpx host, I found a baby barn owl ๐Ÿ˜€

image

Barn owlet

The owlet was out in broad daylight and there was no sign of mum as we watched for some hours. We had to save the owlet from heading towards the road (although French country roads are not so busy) and the neighbouring dog. So I got to hold the owlet ๐Ÿ˜€

image

The Owlet seemed to feel safe and closed its eyes

We looked up on the internet about how to rear them, whether we should touch them etc. by the time it began to get dark there was still no sign of mum. Then we heard the other siblings start to hiss from a high chimney stack, this way we knew where the owlet had come from, then we heard more hissing on the ground and look.

image

Owlet siblings sooo sweet

As you can see, we located another sibling out of the nest so we put both owlets below the chimney stack and waited, they kept each other warm. We were so pleased to see a large barn owl fly by in the moonlight because we were not looking forward to the icky job of feeding small animals to the owlets. The next day fortunately they were still alive (there are not so many predators in France because the French hunt a lot) It was sad to leave the owlets but I know we helped, because both owlets were together below the chimney, the mother did not have to look for them and spend more energy taking food to different locations. We know mum fed them because next day there were small owl pellets on the ground near them. I truly hope they survived but in my heart I know they were better out there in the wild than being reared by us ๐Ÿ˜

We found a glow worm as it got dark.

image

Leaf glowing because of glow worm

Here is its abdomen on closer inspection.

image

Glow worm rear

Here it is in some torch light.

image

Glow worm

We went to Cabourg.

image

windy

I went on my first ferris wheel ๐Ÿ˜€

image

Cabourg ferris wheel

It was very high but I kept my composure even though the wind was blowing the carriage about :/
image

We went on some of the WWII landing beaches. These are beaches where the British, Canadians and Americans came over from UK to save the French from Hitler’s army, which had invaded France. This is a monument on Juno beach

image

This is a WWII bunker built by Hitler’s army to stop the allies coming to save France.

This bunker is named after the Canadian soldier who hit it, you can see the damage in the photo.

This tank was exhumed from the sand many years after the war.

Here is the sign which explains.

Here is the restored tank as it looks today It is called 1 Charlie.

image

Heave ho

Here is a plaque by the tank.
image

The man who drove the tank survived the war and after he died his ashes were scattered on the beach near to where 1 Charlie was buried back then.
image

Today the beaches are not just a remembrance place.
image

But also a tourist resort.

image

Normandy beach

I am grateful that the beaches are peaceful now and being enjoyed by lots of people.
image

We went to Etretat, where there are awesome stacks

image

Stacks of Etretat beach

I got to swim.

image

Oooh I'm not sure about this

When the tide went out we went on a cliff walk and then went to explore the caves along the beach ๐Ÿ˜€

image

Beach caves

This scary place is like a hidden smuggler’s den it gets totally flooded when the tide comes in, it looks like there used to be a tunnel inside which has had tons of heavy pebbles forced up it over the years ๐Ÿ˜

image

Scary place

There was a long dark tunnel in the cave ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

image

Tunnel in beach cave France

Before we decided to explore the tunnel I was relieved to see this sign ๐Ÿ˜‰
image

Luckily it had some English โ™กโ™ฅโ˜…โ˜†โ—‡โ—†. The tunnel opened out at the end
image

Onto another bay with more cliffs.
image

And more stacks.
image

I found an interesting anemone ๐Ÿ™‚
image

We went for walks and bike rides. We did foraging and found yummy wild strawberries ๐Ÿ˜€

image

Mmmm my favourite

We saw hares boxing :/ I managed to capture one on film, the other ran off as we got close.

image

Wild hare

We saw wild deer ๐Ÿ™‚

image

Wild deer at dusk

I was very pleased to get a pic of a white admiral on one of our walks, even mum hadn’t got one before now, as they are rare in UK and fly high in the trees.

image

My very own photo of a white admiral

The underwing is very beautiful, next time I will capture that on film also. To end, here is this blogs quote.

I live in a very small house, but my window looks out on a very large world

The Travelsome Kid’s 9th blog: Autonomous Education, a tenagers point of view

Published June 6, 2015 by The travelsome kid

Freedom

For those who think that the word ‘tenager’ is spelt wrong and is ‘teenager’ I am going to say that they are wrong. I am ten years old and my hormones are kicking in at this stage, so as I am not classified as a ‘teenager’ I was called a ‘tenager’ on my tenth birthday. All my friends in Sitges (my tenth birthday was there so I had a party and a huge traditional (for me) pancake cake, yum yum! : p ) agreed that it was a good name for me ๐Ÿ˜€

A brief description of this blog:

I would like people to know that I am not going to be political or try to convince people that this is the best way to educate their children. This blog is simply going to be about how I have my education, I apologise in advance for the many photos of myself, but this is about me and my classroom of life. I hope you don’t get bored :/ because my classroom is big and my teachers are many.

Funnily enough, the most common question that I get asked by adults is: “What about socialisation? don’t you miss having friends?”

My answer to that is:

I meet more people than I would do if I was in school, and it’s much easier to speak to adults than it would be if the only adults I met were my mum and dad and teachers, and the occasional friend of my mum and dad. It is a fact that I am confident in speaking to adults, but I am better off when I am mixing with people in their twenties and teens, as I am a little bit old for my chronological age (I think so anyway). I am ok with children around my age, but sometimes they prove to be a bit annoying (and boring) but when I want to play and be silly they are fine, anyway, there are always exceptions in every area ๐Ÿ˜‰ I will mention no names ๐Ÿ˜€

Other things that certain adults might say is: “What about qualifications? ”

My answer to that is:

I have always been told that it is never too late to learn, and my dad is living proof, because he went back to school at forty eight, and I think that he is a good example to me, as I hope to travel for quite a long time yet.

One of the things about school which I am very dubious about is:

I have heard that you’re not allowed to talk to the people next to you, and I think that is unnatural, ย but I’m not going to pursue that subject either, because I have never been to school so can’t give a balanced view.

What I like best about my lifestyle is:

I am freerange, I have lots and lots of friends and I can look after all sorts of lovely (and grumpy) animals a lot of the time, because my parents are volunteers and do voluntary housesitting, as you know, one of my favourite hobbies is photography, and I have the perfect opportunity to get superb photographs of rare and local butterflies and orchids all over the place! Loads of things I learn are not actual subjects in schools, like learning about plants, animals and trees. I am immersed in my learning, living it, being in it, part of it. For example: when I learn about lifecycles and food chains I actually see it and touch it. I have watched the complete lifecycle of caterpillars and frogs with my own eyes and not just looked at pictures in books.

My hopes for the future are:

At the moment, I’d like to be a linguist when I grow up, but I need to learn languages to do that and I am not so good at applying myself, and learning languages is hard, so I don’t know about that. I have been learning French on ‘Duolingo’ https://www.duolingo.com ( check out this app) and I meet lots of people from different countries so I pick up the occasional word or phrase in another language, which I never forget.

I would love to live in a V.W camper with a dog and travel on my own, mainly in France, visiting Spain once in a while. I could stay in England one winter, because I would like to see some snow again believe it or not, I haven’t seen snow in about three years, so I would love to see some again ๐Ÿ˜€ ‘do you wanna build a snowman…’ :p

My mum would like me to be a writer because she says I am very good at it, and it would give me the freedom to keep travelling. She says I could illustrate my own book because she thinks I am great at drawing also.

ย My parents’ worries are:

They worry that I go to bed too late and get up too late.

My answer to that is:

I can’t sleep unless I’m really tired, so I read until I am. In the morning I feel sleepy and warm, and downstairs is sometimes cold or at least not as snuggly as my bed, so I stay in my sleeping bag as long as possible to be warm, and I often make up the ends of my dreams if they get cut off. ย

My parents worry that I eat too many sugary things and too much junk food like pizza and chips.

My answer to that is:

I eat lots of healthy things as well, like a whole punnet of tomatoes in one go, and two hundred and fifty grams of strawberries in one go as well. I also eat tons of raw carrots, and my mum’s delicious chilli ‘non’ carne (I am vegetarian), ย and her roast potatoes and her roast parsnips, and lots of granny smith apples, and, when they’re available, raw peas, to say nothing of raw red pepper and oranges and grapefruit, and my mum’s macaroni ‘non’ cheese ( I don’t like cheese).

So technically, I am a healthy eater, even if I do eat junk food a lot. :p ๐Ÿ˜€

image

My first experience with a cat

So for the many people who think that home educated children miss out on socialising I have this to say….I think the way I socialise is very natural, I get to choose my friends from different age groups, cultures, backgrounds and from different countries. I have human and animal friends and I am not left with a small selection of children all the same age as me. I can choose to communicate and see my friends when I want, if I change or they change I can choose to drop them, or them drop me without being told that I have to be nice or have to be friends because my parents are friends with their parents, or because we go to the same school or live in the same area. And for all the people who think home educated people are locked up by their parents and the parents choose the friends……maybe there is some truth in this ๐Ÿ™‚ lol

image

Uoh here we go in the naughty room

Overview…..

So have you guessed yet that the world is my classroom and my teachers are everyone and everything in it?. Learning is an adventure, the world is also my garden and my playground which I share with everyone else. The way I live makes the great outdoors the conservatory of my living space and because of this, I am always very close to nature. I am fortunate to have seen six Kingfisher birds in my lifetime so far ( how many? Yes six!!!) I witness nature happening all around me on a daily basis, one day is never the same as another and I have learned a lot about nature science just by living amongst it, of course the internet helps with that little extra research and for identifying things. It is my ambition to get an excellent photo of a kingfisher, and I will, even though they are very shy birds. Here is a list of some home educated people:
Beatrix Potter, Thomas Edison, Agatha Christie, Alexander Graham Bell, Lewis Carroll, Florence Nightingale, Virginia Woolf and Taylor Swift.

I have never been to school so I can’t compare school to home education, but I love my freedom and if later in life I need a certificate to say I am capable then I will go and achieve one. It is never too late to get an academic education with qualifications. Qualifications don’t guarantee you a job. University leaves you in debt. I believe work can bring you money but it does not guarantee you happiness. I have learned from the way I live with my parents that it is easier than people think to live on very little money …..and be happy.

All children are different, my brother had a structured home education up to secondary level, my parents say that they felt this was better suited to his personality and his way of learning. He now has a degree in psychology but is not in a job that he likes, he works to earn money to live like so many people. We are who we are, and life, experience and people shape us. What I want to be most of all when I grow up is happy ๐Ÿ˜‰

For anyone who thinks I do not get enough academia: I know that the capital of England is ‘E’ ๐Ÿ˜€ lol

Here is a link to a home educating support group:

http://www.educationotherwise.net/

Here is a link to an interesting article from ‘The Guardian’ newspaper

http://www.theguardian.com/education/2008/aug/19/schools.education

Ok, I have been looking up some quotes so I will end this blog with a couple of quotes, and have found so many good and inspirational quotes that in future, I will begin all of my blogs with a quote ๐Ÿ˜€

“I think you learn more if you are laughing at the same time” …Mary Ann Shaffe ( American writer and editor)

“Education is no subsitute for intelligence” …Frank Herbert (an American science fiction writer)

I apologise to all of my teachers who have been missed out, but this blog could have gone on forever if I had included every one of them ๐Ÿ˜€

As promised in my last blog, this blog will showcase my newly acquired photographic skills ๐Ÿ˜‰
The photo above shows me sitting patiently waiting for the ‘Western green lizard’ to come back out of its hiding place, yes I am sitting in the road which I could not do safely anywhere I can think of in England, but hey, this is France and it is vast compared to England. I first thought it was an iguana because it is so much greener and bigger than the regular lizards we see in France, but having looked it up on the internet alas, it is no iguana.
And here it is ๐Ÿ™‚

image

As well as improving my photography, I have learned to charm the wildlife and gain its trust, this needs patience and calm. This is a Granville Fritillary ๐Ÿ™‚

image

Here it is close up ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

image

And this is its underwing.

image

This is a ‘Man Orchid’ :/

This is a ‘Lady Orchid’

This is a male ‘Escher’s blue’ butterfly, as with many of the blues the females are actually brown with orange bits on the wing tips

image

This is a beautiful red rose

image

These are fabulous mountains in the Aude gorge

image

This is the ‘Garden Tiger moth’ it has so many colour variations that it would be extremely rare to find any two exactly the same

image

This is the the caterpillar of the same moth

image

This is some lovely French countryside, as you can see there are lots of grapes grown in France for wine :/

image

This is southern ‘Speckled wood’ butterfly in the north the orange colours are replaced by a pale yellow. It’s on a hawthorn bush which has a super strong smell.

image

This is a moth but as there are soooo many different kinds of moth, I don’t know which one it is : p

image

This is a coypu, and I think he is really grumpy looking. Like…um….oh yeah! Mister grumpy in the mister men! Hee hee hee ๐Ÿ˜€ The French kill them because they apparently damage the river banks ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

image

And here he is across the river with a lovely reflection ๐Ÿ˜‰

image

This is the ‘Monkey Orchid’ I think this is the one that should be called a man orchid because..well erm, it has a little something between it’s legs if you look closer :/

image

This is the male ‘Broad bodied chaser Dragonfly’ the female is brown and yellow

image

This is a ‘Mallard’ duck family…soooo cute ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

This is possibly a female ‘white legged damselfly’, it is quite hard to identify different damselflies.

I think this is a one of the ‘darter’ dragonflies, not sure which :/

My friend the 'Peacock' butterfly

Hi nature lovers,
This blog is going to be about nature and will show off my mum’s excellent photos. My mum is the ‘official’ photographer for my blog and people have been posting good comments about the pics, also people are asking for another blog already and nothing exceptional or really exciting has happened since my last blog, so this is an easy option that will hopefully interest my readers ๐Ÿ™‚

Meanwhile, I have been practicing hard with a zoom lens and have some quite decents pics of my own :), but let’s see mum’s first…

This is probably well known to most of you and is a close up of the butterfly in the above picture that landed on me. It is a ‘Peacock’ butterfly.

image

Peacock on Sedum plant

These are 2 dragonfly chrysalis casings (it might look like a mating situation but it is just where one dragonfly nymph climbed out on top of another that had already finished its metomorphosis and flown off) Believe it or not I once had a whole jar full of these :p I gave them to a nature trust ๐Ÿ™‚

image

Dragonfly chrysalis casings

The dragonfly nymph can stay in a pond for up to 5 years, when they get the message to come out it is as if it is very urgent and they choose the nearest plant stalk sticking out of the pond and climb up and cling on :p This is the new dragonfly coming out.

image

Dragonfly emerged from chrysalis

When it comes out it is dripping wet and takes a long time to dry out before it performs its fantastic aerodynamics. The last thing it does is shakes its wings really fast, it is great to watch and I am lucky to have witnessed it more than once ๐Ÿ™‚

This is a froghopper nymph.

image

Froghopper nymph

You have probably not seen one before, because they are usually hidden in lots of frothy white liquid (often called cuckoo spit ) :p You have probably seen it in plants and wondered what it is, it is a way for the nymphs to protect themselves from drying out and from other predators. The adult froghopper is like a beetle but it does not fly it hops really high and far.

This is a big fat juicy caterpillar of the ‘Swallowtail’ butterfly.

image

Swallowtail caterpillar

And this is the beautiful ‘Swallowtail’butterfly that it turns in to.

image

Swallowtail butterfly

This is a glow worm (as you can see it is not actually a worm)

image

Glow worm female

This female cannot fly so she will usually climb up a plant stalk and give off a lovely green neon glow from her bum :p to attract the male, the male is a regular looking beetle ๐Ÿ™‚

This is a ladybird larva.

image

Ladybird larvae

And this is a ladybird larva just gone into a chrysalis.

image

Ladybird chrysalis

Here is the finished ladybird just come out from the chrysalis, it takes a while for the bright red colour to develop. There is also another insect inbetween the chrysalis case and ladybird in the picture (just in case you were confused !?!?)

image

Ladybird emerging from chrysalis

This little critter is a shield bug, there are loads of different sorts but this is a really pretty one ๐Ÿ˜‰

image

Shield bug

This is a male ‘Demoiselle’ a damselfly (similar to dragonflies but they have thinner bodies)

image

Male Demoiselle

This is the female, she has more green colours ๐Ÿ™‚

image

Female Demoiselle

This is a ‘Large skipper’ butterfly, there are loads of different ‘Skippers’ (they are all small, despite the name)

image

Large skipper butterfly

This is a ‘Large green bush cricket’ she was laying eggs in a hole in the tarmac and would not leave until she had finished laying, so we stayed to protect her from being squashed :/ she was French ๐Ÿ™‚

image

Large green bush cricket

The most obvious difference between grasshoppers and crickets is that crickets have longer antenae.

I think this is an ‘Adonis blue’ butterfly, they are very similar to the ‘Common blue’ but I think the common blue have a bolder black wing outline?

image

Adonis or Common blue butterfly

The blues are all small butterflies between 18mm-33mm. The females are more brown, sometimes with a blue tinge. You can usually identify a blue by its underwing they are all similar like this….

image

Underwing of blue butterfly

…And this which is a ‘Lang’s short tailed blue’ (it is quite a rare blue)

image

Lang's short tailed blue butterfly

This is a dragonfly we saw in Spain, so I don’t know which type it is :p (If anyone knows please post a comment ๐Ÿ™‚ )

image

Dragonfly in Spain

Finally, this is a ‘Carpenter bee’ you won’t see them in the UK. They have pretty colours in the sun (but can just look black when the sun isn’t on them)

Okay, now time for me to show off my newly found skills, thanks to a Fujifilm finepix S4800 (30x optical zoom) which is my dad’s but he hardly uses it ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

This ‘Goldfinch’, (which there were flocks of!!! :D) happened to land on a twig/plant right outside the window, and I
was sooooooooooo lucky to have dad’s camera in my hands at the time, because it is sooooo easy to use ( I only recently started to put it to good use, as mum can’t quite get her head around the fancy technical settings on it! ๐Ÿ˜€ and she is more in to macro than zoom)

My pic of a Goldfinch

This little guy is the first picture I got, and mum insisted (though it’s a little bit blurred (only a bit, though!) ) that I put him on (or she, because girls rule ;D) because she loves the way he looks fluffy (I think he looks cheeky and inquisitive :D) he is also a Golden finch (just kidding :D)

This is a ‘Sardinian warbler'(they don’t have a backround of eating sardines though? ;D) this little guy is definitely a guy (shame he didn’t have a mate) because the females are browner with a scarcely contrasting cap. They have conspiciously red eyes and eye rings, and white outer tail feathers. The only other warblers with red eyes are: the ‘Mรฉnรฉtries’ warbler’ and the ‘Rรผppell’s warbler’.
None of the others have red eye rings anyway, so i guess i’m really lucky to have photographed this little guy when he’s the odd one out!! ;D

Sardinian Warbler by Travelsome Kid ๐Ÿ˜‰

This little ‘House Sparrow’ (though he’d probably prefer a cottage instead) landed on top of a awning by a shop, and i absoloutely took the chance of photographing him. He certainly got taken by suprise, because he didn’t clean his beak for the photo at all (they’re rather messy eaters sometimes, you know (just kidding) )
